Summary

From bestselling author Mike Omer comes the first in a new series full of the psychological twists and police procedural turns that his fans have come to know and love。

Lieutenant Abby Mullen is no stranger to crisis。 As the hostage negotiation instructor for the NYPD, she deals with worst-case scenarios every day。 Nothing fazes her anymore。

That all changes when she gets a call from Eden Fletcher, a fellow survivor of the infamous Wilcox cult。 The two haven’t spoken since the night of a tragic, fiery massacre, when their paths diverged。 But now Eden needs Abby’s help: someone has kidnapped her son and is demanding a $5 million ransom。 As Abby throws herself into the case, she can’t help but wonder why the kidnapper has targeted Eden。 But Eden refuses to talk。 She’s silent about the relics of their shared past hanging on her walls。 About the kidnapper’s possible motives。 About what’s happened in the years since she and Abby parted ways。

As the truth closes in, Abby realizes that her past may not be as far behind as she thought…and it’s come home to collect。

First of all, I really enjoyed the storyline。 The pacing was terrific。 The protagonist, Abby, was brilliant as a negotiator and police officer。 And the book's moral to always be wary about what you reveal online is a cautionary tale that we all should take heed of。 However, I had a big problem with a lot of the misogynistic language thrown around, especially by the villain(s)。 I didn't like it at all, and unfortunately that has brought my rating down for the book, which could have scored a high First of all, I really enjoyed the storyline。 The pacing was terrific。 The protagonist, Abby, was brilliant as a negotiator and police officer。 And the book's moral to always be wary about what you reveal online is a cautionary tale that we all should take heed of。 However, I had a big problem with a lot of the misogynistic language thrown around, especially by the villain(s)。 I didn't like it at all, and unfortunately that has brought my rating down for the book, which could have scored a high 4 otherwise。 Many thanks to the publisher and author for the ARC。 。。。more

Wow! What an endingVery dramatic and engaging book。 A great twisted plot that kept me guessing until exposed, well done! That ending。。。 Has to be explained!

It was quite interesting at the beginning and the end, at least right until the very end, with a lot of skimming through inconsequential domestic guff in the middle。 And then, at the very end, there is the desperate attempt to garner interest in the next in the series by flagging up a further walk through the main character's unreliable memories of her cult upbringing; I'll be passing on that。 It was quite interesting at the beginning and the end, at least right until the very end, with a lot of skimming through inconsequential domestic guff in the middle。 And then, at the very end, there is the desperate attempt to garner interest in the next in the series by flagging up a further walk through the main character's unreliable memories of her cult upbringing; I'll be passing on that。 。。。more

Well developed storylineAbbey Mullen is a compelling character。 Her past influences her present and almost to a fault。 The characters had depth and there were enough surprises to keep this reader to the end。 Despite a cliche plot line the story worked。

Silo

pretty goodthe ending was fire goddamncrazy plottwistnto a bad book slightly predictable tho

Miguel D。 de Torres

Another great bookBook read well with good intervals from all characters。 The only thing that sounded a bit off was the language of the teen ager。 She sounded a little stereotypical。

Vicki

Heart pounding suspense throughout。A large cast of villains and many victims (as is not unusual considering the plot)。 Highly recommended, but there is one big question left unanswered at the end。 Maybe another book?

Sally Jo Reemsnyder

Y SilkIt was well written and has you looking forward to the next book to learn more about her past and how it impacts her。

Glenda Cottle

I really enjoyed this book。 It kept me reaching for it night after night。

Mandy

Fast paced and interesting。 Ended prepped for the sequel。Very relatable and likeable narrator。 Interesting story about the dangers of social media and obsessive fans。 The cult backgrounds and involvements further sliced it up。I do not want to wait a whole year for the second book!

Some of the "negotiation language" got a bit repetitive and was explained too much for my liking, also was not a fan of the ending but in general a solid story, the cult angle being especially intriguing。 Looking forward to reading the next one。 Some of the "negotiation language" got a bit repetitive and was explained too much for my liking, also was not a fan of the ending but in general a solid story, the cult angle being especially intriguing。 Looking forward to reading the next one。 。。。more

Escaping and confronting your past。It's always interesting to know what happens to someone who goes through living in a cult。 You always wonder what is lacking in someone that they could be so ready to give up their livelihood; their freedom, their sense of worth to be controlled by someone else。 With that said I thought the story was very well told。 It gives you a glimpse into that kind of surrounding。 Escaping and confronting your past。It's always interesting to know what happens to someone who goes through living in a cult。 You always wonder what is lacking in someone that they could be so ready to give up their livelihood; their freedom, their sense of worth to be controlled by someone else。 With that said I thought the story was very well told。 It gives you a glimpse into that kind of surrounding。 。。。more

Not terrible but not amazing either Fair plot, moved sorta fast but some added fluff made this book a bit too long。 The ending was solid enough to intrigue my curiosity for the 2nd book in this series

Definite Page TurnerMike Omer keeps you on the edge of your seat from the time you open the book to the time you read the last word。 I turned the page for the next chapter to see there was no more! Wow。

One of my fastest reads this year。 The back and forth from law enforcement to kidnapper kept the pages turning and yet didn’t give anything away。 I am glad Omer listened to his wife! I enjoyed Abby’s character。 She had depth and dimension; and certainly offered some practical advice for how to engage in difficult conversations。

Sally Mccoy

Page TurnerI enjoy books to teach you something in addition to the storyline。 This book has interesting information about cults and also about hostage negotiating。 It’s well written I am the characters are believable。

There was one thing I learned from this book。。。。I am not a negotiator。 Abby is an amazing person! The obstacles she had to overcome in her upbringing made her a strong person and a very good negotiator。 The twist in the end made me wanting the next book so bad。I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased。 Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer!

great start to a series 。。。 powerful characters and story telling, including terrifying descriptions of how a cult recruits members and achieves blind loyalty 。。。 and oh so similar to the Republican cult of Trump
